Meta has agreed to pay up to $17.1 billion over 10 years to settle claims from U.S. states and territories that Facebook and Instagram harmed young users through addictive design features, misleading safety representations and the collection of children’s data without parental consent. The agreement requires Meta to introduce stronger age verification, parental controls, daily usage limits, overnight restrictions and tighter safeguards against harmful content, while the company continues to deny wrongdoing.
