Some of the most important fintech companies are almost invisible to the end consumer.

Lean Technologies, founded by Hisham Al-Falih, Aditya Sarkar and Ashu Gupta, has built its business on becoming part of the financial infrastructure beneath other applications. Rather than competing to be the bank, lender or investment app customers see, Lean provides APIs that allow those companies to connect securely to banking data and payment rails.

Led by Co-Founder and CEO Hisham Al-Falih, the Riyadh-based company has become one of the Middle East's most important Open Banking and Open Finance infrastructure providers.

Its platform supports account verification, financial-data access, account-to-account payments, payouts, reconciliation and other infrastructure used by financial institutions and technology businesses. Lean says its platform now supports more than 30 banks across MENA and has processed more than $16 billion in volume.

Regulatory progress has been fundamental to the business.

Lean became the first licensed Open Banking provider in Saudi Arabia and is also regulated within the UAE through the evolving Open Finance framework and the Abu Dhabi Global Market ecosystem. This gives the company a front-row position as regulators across the GCC shift from traditional bank-controlled financial architecture towards permissioned data sharing and account-to-account payments.

Its customers and partners span categories including lending, investment, payments, crypto, property and consumer finance. Companies such as Careem, Sarwa, Ziina, Tabby and Tamara have used Lean infrastructure for various financial-data or payment use cases.

The company's 2026 work with Ziina offers perhaps the clearest illustration of the opportunity. Together they enabled the UAE's first live customer-initiated Open Finance payment, allowing a user to pay directly from a bank account through regulated API connectivity.

Al-Falih's leadership challenge is unusual. Infrastructure companies must innovate rapidly while maintaining levels of reliability, security and compliance associated with banks. Their customers are often financial companies that compete with one another, making neutrality and system resilience essential.

Yet that position also makes Lean strategically powerful.

As financial services become increasingly interconnected, the companies controlling secure connectivity between banks, fintechs and customers become critical pieces of the ecosystem.

Lean is building precisely that layer—making Al-Falih one of the region's most influential fintech leaders despite operating largely behind the applications consumers see.
