Few fintech companies are as closely connected with the digital transformation of their home market as Thawani Pay is with Oman.

Eng. Majid Al Amri founded Thawani in 2016 after identifying a gap in Oman's digital economy: businesses were developing online services, but payment options were not keeping pace. A computer engineering graduate of Sultan Qaboos University, he came to fintech after a career spanning technology, business development, sales and finance, including roles in the oil and gas sector.

As Founder, Managing Director and a Board Member, Al Amri leads the company's strategic direction, growth, partnerships and innovation. Under his leadership, Thawani has grown into a financial technology platform serving individuals, merchants, businesses and institutions, with services spanning digital wallets, online payment gateways, payment links, SoftPOS, prepaid cards, bill payments, money transfers and insurance services.

Security and regulation have been central to that growth. In 2018, Thawani became the first Omani fintech company to obtain PCI-DSS certification. In 2020, it became the first non-bank fintech in Oman to receive a Payment Service Provider licence from the Central Bank of Oman, a milestone for the company and for the wider sector.

Its card business has followed. Thawani obtained a licence to issue Visa-branded prepaid cards in 2024 and, in 2025, became the first Omani fintech licensed by Visa to issue credit cards. In January 2026, it also announced a strategic partnership with Network International aimed at expanding credit-card capabilities and digital-payment innovation in Oman.

Mojab Business, launched in 2025, shows how the company is extending beyond consumer payments. The platform combines corporate cards with tools to allocate budgets, assign cardholders and monitor transactions, giving organisations clearer visibility and more direct control over employee and departmental spending.

Forbes Middle East has recognised Thawani in its Fintech 50, ranking it 40th in 2024 and 36th in 2025. Al Amri describes these as collective achievements that reflect the commitment of the team and the confidence of customers and partners.

His leadership philosophy is captured in a personal motto: “Challenges are the real opportunities.” For Al Amri, that means approaching difficulties with curiosity and persistence, giving people clear direction and ownership, and making sure innovation serves a practical purpose: a service that is easier to use, more reliable or more widely accessible. At Thawani, security, compliance and customer trust are treated as part of product development from the start.

Beyond Thawani, he has supported entrepreneurs as a voluntary adviser at Zubair SEC, sharing experience with founders across Oman's start-up ecosystem.

His ambition is to build an Omani financial technology business that earns customers' trust and develops the capabilities to compete regionally. As Oman accelerates towards a more cashless and digitally connected economy, Thawani is increasingly becoming part of the infrastructure underpinning that transformation.
