As e-commerce expanded across the Middle East, the ability of businesses to accept payments online became one of the fundamental building blocks of the region's digital economy. Telr, founded in 2014 and led by Khalil Alami since 2019, has spent years building infrastructure around precisely that challenge.

The Dubai-based company describes itself as an online payment gateway, but its proposition increasingly reaches beyond conventional transaction processing. Telr supports more than 40,000 merchants across the region and processes more than five million transactions each month, positioning it as an important link between merchants, consumers and the rapidly diversifying digital-payment landscape.

For businesses, Telr provides the ability to accept multiple payment methods online while also offering services designed to make digital commerce easier for smaller companies that may lack extensive technical resources.

That SME focus has become increasingly important as more regional businesses move online. Payment gateways once competed primarily on transaction acceptance; today merchants expect integrated solutions spanning checkout, payment links, fraud management, alternative payment methods and access to financial tools.

Telr has responded by expanding its proposition. Through Telr Finance, the company offers qualifying merchants access to flexible business funding, effectively using its position within the payments ecosystem as a pathway into financing.

The company is also closely aligned with the development of domestic payment infrastructure in the UAE. In April 2026, Telr enabled Jaywan, the UAE's national card scheme operated by Al Etihad Payments, across its merchant network. The integration gives Telr's UAE merchants the ability to accept locally issued Jaywan cards alongside existing payment methods.

Alami's leadership has therefore spanned two distinct phases of regional fintech. The first was about enabling businesses to participate in e-commerce at all. The second is about helping those businesses navigate an increasingly sophisticated ecosystem of cards, wallets, BNPL products, local payment rails and financing.

Telr's continued relevance reflects that evolution.

Its significance is perhaps greatest for SMEs, for whom payments are closely linked with cash flow and survival. By bringing payment acceptance and financing closer together, Telr is moving from being a gateway through which money passes to becoming a broader partner in how merchants operate and grow.
