In an increasingly crowded digital-banking market, ruya is attempting to differentiate itself through a combination that remains relatively rare: digital-first technology, fully Shari’ah-compliant banking and a Banking-as-a-Service platform for fintech and crypto.
Headquartered in Ajman and led by Chief Executive Officer Christoph Koster, Ruya Community Bank launched in 2024 as a licensed bank regulated by the Central Bank of the UAE. Rather than simply digitising the traditional banking model, ruya was established with the stated objective of combining modern banking technology with ethical Islamic-finance principles.
Koster brings an unconventional background to the role. His career has included experience with Roland Berger, Emirates NBD, the Abu Dhabi Investment Office and G42, giving him exposure across consulting, banking, investment and technology. That perspective is reflected in ruya’s positioning: the bank sees its regulated infrastructure, not just its app, as the core of its proposition.
For individual customers, ruya offers current and savings accounts, cards, domestic and international transfers, bill payments and investment products. Customers can open accounts digitally using UAE PASS, while its current accounts are designed without the conventional barriers of a minimum balance or salary requirement. Ruya also runs physical “community centres.”
Its ambitions in business banking are particularly relevant to the fintech landscape. SMEs can apply digitally for accounts with no minimum balance, but the bigger bet is Banking-as-a-Service: ruya is increasingly partnering with technology platforms to embed its regulated banking infrastructure into third-party propositions.
Koster believes AI agents will make the app matter less, and the licence and balance sheet more. Fintech partners can launch accounts and cards under ruya’s licence while owning the customer experience. The same logic extends to crypto: ruya provides Central Bank-approved client money accounts to licensed virtual-asset firms and gives customers access to Bitcoin through a licensed partner.
Ruya’s opportunity is to demonstrate that Shari’ah compliance, modern digital experiences and open fintech infrastructure do not need to exist separately.
Under Koster, ruya is building a model in which a values-based bank becomes the regulated backbone for the UAE’s fintech and crypto companies.
